Flash Memory/EEPROM

New device achieves the same high readout speed as 16-bit parallel products
High-Speed NOR Type 8-Pin Flash Memory

SANYO Semiconductor Co., Ltd. LE25FW408A 8-pin NOR type flash memory achieves the same high readout speed of parallel flash memory and is provided in the same package as serial flash memory products.

Overview

While there are strong demands for increased functionality and higher performance in the rapidly expanding portable equipment market, there are also continuing desires for further miniaturization and thinner form factors. Although microcontroller and DSPs are used for control in this equipment, it is the flash memory that is used to store the main control software and thus can be said to hold the key to performance in this area. This is because flash memory has the advantage that it can flexibly respond to changes and improvements in this software.

At the same time as being provided in the 8-pin package commonly used for serial flash memory, the LE25FW408A 4 Mbit flash memory now developed by SANYO achieves the same data readout speed (in burst read mode) as 48-pin package NOR type 16-bit parallel flash memory devices.

This product allows both the circuit board mounting area and the number of lines in the flash memory bus to be reduced without impacting overall performance. This can lead to overall reductions in both the area and number of layers in the printed circuit board.

Furthermore, SANYO Semiconductor plans to expand this 8-pin package flash memory series product line to include 8, 16, and 32 MB products, with sample shipment planned for the second quarter of 2006. In addition to the high-speed erase function featured by earlier SANYO flash memory products, this new series will feature a newly-added high-speed write function. Together, these functions make the total erase plus write speed about six times faster than earlier SANYO products and will significantly reduce the software download times both in the manufacturing process and after the end product has been shipped.

The LE25FW408A and the other products in this new series will be optimal for use as the software storage memory in portable equipment such as digital cameras and cell phones, computer related equipment such as printers, and function modules such as GPS receiver and wireless LAN modules.
